Forensic Animation

Forensic Animation is a step up in power and complexity from Traditional 3D animation. In Traditional 3D animation, the animation is used solely to illustrate that which is already known. In Forensic Animation, the 3D Model and the Animation process are used directly by the experts to assist in determining what did and did not happen. The two tools that separate Forensic from Traditional animation are the 3D Working Model and Laser-Assisted Photogrammetry.

Challenge

How to reconstruct an accident or crime when physical reconstruction is not possible due to the complexity of the action, lack of safe access or the scene has changed.

Solution

Much like a scientist or mathematician, the Forensic Animator can use a "Working Model" to assist the attorney and expert in reconstructing the event. By recreating the accident scene and objects in the computer, the expert and animator can test possible scenarios to determine the most likely version of events. This computer generated working model will include all the known physical evidence and will enable the attorney and experts to bridge gaps in evidence to reconstruct what happened, determine what could not have happened, and who was at fault. The working model can then be converted into a compelling animation to "show" the jury what actually occurred. Read More About the Workng Model (Link to Volume 1 newsletter)

Laser-Assisted Photogrammetry

Challenge

How to develop an accurate reconstruction of an event when key pieces of physical evidence (such as a skid mark) were poorly measured but are documented in a photograph?

Solution

Reconstruction of physical evidence that is missing from the accident, fire or crime scene is often required to create a complete reconstruction. Using photogrammetry, 3-D laser scanning and a proprietary software analytical system, PSI can accurately place within a computer generated working model of the scene evidence that exist on a photograph, but is no longer at the scene.

Client Comments

When we decided to get PSI involved in producing an annimation we had no idea they'd have the impact they would. We were amazed.

"PSI's analyses resulted in a visualization so powerful, and so precise, that I could have obtained a defense verdict with it alone".
